How to Calculate Carryover GPA

Most students don’t really understand how carry-over is calculated and how it affects their GPA, that’s the motive behind writing this post.

You cant really understand how carry-over is calculated without knowing how GPA is calculated, so am going to explain how GPA is calculated then relate it to how carry over is calculated as simply as I can.

Basics

First some basics

GPA stands for Grade Point Average

TCP stands for Total Credit Point

TNU stands for Total Number of Unit

GPA Explanation

GPA is given by TCP divided by TNU

GPA = TCP / TNU

TNU Explanation

Lets assume a student (Mr.Adam) registered 2 courses

GSE 111 : 3 Units

GSE 112 : 2 Units

Right now Mr.Adam’s TNU = 5

So he just needs TCP to determine his GPA

TCP Explanation

Every grade has a value attached, for fupre

A = 5

B = 4

C = 3

D = 4

F = 0

The grade Mr. Adam gets for each course will determine his CP for that course, CP is simply the value of his grade multiplied by the credit unit for that course.

So for example if he has A in GSE 111, and B in GSE 112 his CP’s will be ass follows;

CP FOR GSE 111 = Credit Unit X Grade Value = 3 X 5 = 15
CP FOR GSE 112 = Credit Unit X Grade Value = 2 X 4 = 8

Notice that his grade determines his CP for each course

His TCP is simply the sum of all CP’s, in this case 15 + 8 = 23

Carry-Over Explanation

Since Mr. Adams TCP = 23

And his TNU = 5

His GPA will be TCP divided TNU ===> 23 / 5 = 4.60

Okay, we are finally here

Lets assume he got A in GSE 111 and F in GSE 112

His CP FOR GSE 111 would be ===> Credit Unit X Grade Value = 3 X 5 = 15
His CP FOR GSE 112 would be ===> Credit Unit X Grade Value = 2 X 0 = 0

In this case his TCP would be 15 + 0 = 15

GPA would be TCP divided by TNU ===> 15 / 5 = 3.00

So that’s what carry-over does to GPA

I really hope its clear, but if its not….. feel free to ask questions using the comments.

  1. If my cgpa is 2.50 after final year with two carryover courses ACC 410 and ACC 423 and both courses TNU have already been used to calculate my GPA in final year.after writing both courses in final year and score D and D in both courses will it increase my GPA or decrease my GPA.

  2. When the carryover has been written and passed how will it be calculated?
